Vanadium electrolyte has a crucial role in decarbonising industry

Investment into renewable energy and the challenges of energy storage is a critical issue for all nations attending the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in just a few days time. The Paris climate agreement set in 2015 gave an ambitious target to limit global warming to well below 2°C, this will require considerable worldwide changes in historical industrial processes to decarbonise industry and transition into renewables.

Vanadium redox flow batteries or VRFBs are an emerging energy storage system, capable of making stationary energy storage viable in commercial settings with the potential of effectively storing renewable energy. VRFBs are an alternative to Li-Ion batteries specifically in the area of large-scale energy storage, with the ability to hold large charge densities suitable for industrial use, along with a 20+ year lifespan and being intrinsically safer with no risk of thermal runaway they are a leading contender for industrial decarbonisation.

For the VRFB industry, vanadium electrolyte is one of the vital components of a flow battery. Typically manufactured using a wet chemistry approach, this requires the addition of chemical reagents which in turn introduces impurities and can adversely affect VRFB lifetime. We have developed a proprietary one step, direct electrochemical reduction process that removes the need for chemical addition resulting in a high-quality electrolyte free from by-products. Vanadium redox flow batteries are currently being deployed around the world as a large-scale energy storage solution, using higher purity vanadium electrolyte leads to greater energy density and improved battery lifetime.

Without question, large-scale energy storage has a fundamental part in decarbonising industry and creating a more sustainable future, giving the capability to stabilise and better utilise renewable energy sources. We believe that VRFBs have an important role in energy transition for decades to come, and for commercial applications the highest quality VRFB electrolyte will with certainty facilitate performance and a long cycle life.

Our goal at C-Tech Innovation is to be the leader in the design, build and installation of exceptionally high-quality vanadium electrolyte production systems to support the work towards a low carbon future.
