Emergence Of Hydrogen For Industry

Scroll For More

We have the expertise and facilities to deliver hydrogen projects from start to completion. We have experience of developing Hydrogen Technology solutions that are tailored to customers individual processes and provide a pathway in reducing their CO2 emissions.

The world relies on steelmaking, chemical production, and pharmaceuticals however these industries have processes that are energy intensive, relying on fossil fuels as feedstock this resulting in direct industrial processes being one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Action must be taken to reduce emissions and substitute carbon-intensive energy sources.

Processes in these industries require transformation for the goals of net zero to be met, at C-Tech Innovation we are known for our novel process technologies. We are known for creating solutions that are tailored to customers individual processes and provide a pathway in reducing their CO2 emissions. As electro-heating and electrochemical experts, our technologies are compatible with electricity supplied from sustainable sources.

Hydrogen will play a crucial role in the net-zero transition of industry acting both as a fuel and reagent in a growing number of applications. The exploitation of the unique chemical properties of hydrogen in a wider range of applications than ever before will need new approaches to generation, storage, process control and use.

Whatever process challenges our customers are facing, we are happy to help them succeed in developing and deploying low-carbon process technologies.

Development, Scale-up and Testing In A Safe Environment

At C-Tech Innovation we possess the varied technical skillset and have the facilities in place to handle significant volumes of hydrogen on site. This allows for us to work on the development, scale-up and testing of a range of technologies that are required to deliver cost effective process transition to low carbon technologies. We have strong expertise in developing pilot scale units and developing the equipment and process design information that is needed to translate this to a production environment.

Operating with hydrogen presents additional safety challenges and as with all work at C-Tech Innovation we focus on both equipment and process safety at all scales of operation. We have a purpose-built laboratory dedicated to the handling of hydrogen that forms part of our own internal investment in developing and deploying low carbon technologies and allows for hydrogen to be safely managed and integrated into systems using our high efficiency electrical heating technologies.

Our Hydrogen Projects Examples

From feasibility studies to fuel cells

Project 1:
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power System

A technology developer approached C-Tech Innovation to design, develop, test and certify fuel cell systems suitable for use in an aerospace application. The development work started from a demanding performance and operating condition specification and included interaction with airframe, propulsion communication and system integration from the EASA designated design lead.

C-Tech Innovation owned the process design for the integration of liquid hydrogen, thermal management, and operational safety for the entire power system. The fuel cell power unit integrated cells supplied by 3rd parties with bespoke water thermal management approaches required to keep system weight to a minimum. The development of corner case models for operation defined the testing parameters for the system along with the development of test and validation methods for the certification basis of a certified flight system..

Project 2:
Hybrid Microwave and Hydrogen Technology For Demonstrating Low Carbon Iron Making

We were asked by our customer to supply and commission a Rotary Controlled Atmosphere Microwave Pilot Furnace. The equipment is now being used by our customer to investigate and demonstrate the potential for microwave-assisted reduction and oxidation of a range of materials of relevance to industrial decarbonisation and circular economy programmes.

The pilot scale Microwave Assisted Rotary Furnace is being used for hydrogen reduction of iron ore and is capable of processing approximately 1 tonne of iron ore/day. The unit uses hydrogen as the reducing agent and electricity as the primary heating source.

Project 3:
Hydrogen Storage

C-Tech have tested and developed solid state hydrogen storage systems and have the integrated team of materials scientists, process and mechanical engineers required to define develop and scale the hydrogen storage products for your application. The main advantage of solid state hydrogen storage in metal hydrides is that it is a relatively safe and efficient method of storing hydrogen in large quantities when compared to compressed hydrogen gas or liquid hydrogen.

Solid-state hydrogen storage in metal hydrides is that the hydrogen can be stored and released reversibly, meaning that the metal hydride can be used as a hydrogen storage material and a hydrogen release material, providing an efficient and safe way for hydrogen storage and usage. Hydrogen can be stored in metal hydrides at relatively low pressures, and the hydrogen storage density of metal hydrides is typically higher than that of other hydrogen storage methods, such as compressed hydrogen gas or liquid hydrogen. In addition to the space efficiency the low loss rates and low additional energy demand can make them well suited for use in a wide range of applications.

Furthermore, many metal hydrides are non-toxic, and relatively stable, making them safer to handle and store than other hydrogen storage methods. C-Tech can characterise the materials performance, develop test platforms for system development and execute the installation of the storage platforms that make a hydrogen system robust to changing supply and demand levels.
