Our goal is to support your process development at whatever stage you require, from laboratory through to pilot and production. We bring a combination of electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering expertise, and understand the requirements for successful scale-up.

Leaders In Electrochemical Scale-Up

We are experienced at designing equipment that conforms to a wide range of regulatory standards and have supplied equipment to global customers in the chemical, specialty chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors. We are widely experienced with both inorganic and organic reactions, in aqueous and non-aqueous media

Our Electrochemical Scale-Up Offer

  • We take reactions from laboratory scale to pilot and production scale reliably and quickly. We offer full reporting, validation and development at each stage of scale-up
  • Our capabilities go from laboratory scale for feasibility studies to full scale equipment design, build and commissioning of plant at your site
  • With a multi-disciplinary team from project managers to scientists and process, mechanical, electrical and control engineers, we work to deliver solutions to the most challenging of scale-ups

  • We are widely experienced with both inorganic and organic reactions, in aqueous and non-aqueous media
  • We have deployed systems in Canada, USA, Australia, Europe and Africa with full regulatory compliance

Our Process Development and Scale-up Services

Laboratory Scale

Lab Scale Electrochemical Synthesis Project

We will characterise the reaction at laboratory scale. We can use one of our own cells or a proprietary third party cell. Our work will typically include some or all of the following:

  • Validation of previous or literature results
  • Comparison between single pass and recirculation mode if required
  • Reaction characterisation, products and by-products, kinetics, yield, efficiency
  • Evaluate parameters and select optimum conditions
  • Develop analytical methods as required

Pilot Scale

Vanadium Rig

We will demonstrate the reaction at larger scale and generate the data needed to inform the design of a production plant. Pilot scale is typically between 10 L and 50 L and can be done on our own general purpose electrochemical pilot scale units, or on bespoke equipment if required.

Pilot scale work will involve some or all of:

  • Establishment of the Basis of Design for any new build equipment
  • Modification of existing equipment as needed
  • Development or source analytic methods as required
  • Definition of experimental test plan
  • Experimental work and reporting

Production Scale

We design and supply electrochemical production systems to our customers around the world. A typical project features

  • Either a complete integrated plant, or electrochemical modules only with design pack for balance of plant for use by your EPC.
  • Client design approval at concept, preliminary and detailed design stages
  • Skid mounted electrochemical module, power supply module, automatic control system
  • Instrumented for flow, pressure, temperature, off-gas analysis, solution state
  • Either third party cell, or C-Flow™ cell, or bespoke cell design
  • Installation, training and support as required

Our Electrochemical Expertise

We have industry experience of developing custom built electrochemical synthesis (electrosynthesis) equipment from lab scale to pilot and production. The electrosynthesis process involves oxidation (removal of electrons) at the anode or reduction (addition of electrons) at the cathode of an electrochemical cell. The reaction is controlled by the electrode potential and reaction conditions which depend on cell and system design.

The goal is to improve the selectivity and yield of chemical reactions by introducing electrochemical process technology in place of conventional chemical reactions. We apply our expertise in both electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering to develop processes that meet client specifications for conversion and selectivity.

We have developed a range of bespoke electrochemical cells and balance of plant that meet our individual clients’ needs. From proof-of-concept through to production equipment, at C-Tech Innovation our customers partner with us to design, build and deliver bespoke solutions that are engineered specifically to their application, location and industry.

Our systems have been used in Fine Chemical and Pharmaceutical applications amongst others. Examples include:

  • Inorganic chemical synthesis including bromine, chlorine, fluorine, aluminium
  • Aqueous and non-aqueous organic chemical synthesis including L-cysteine, electro-catalytic hydrogenation, the reduction of carboxylic acids

Advantages Of Electrochemical Synthesis

  • High Selectivity and Product Yields
Electrosynthesis offers high and controllable selectivity and product yields with no problematic by-products. Selectivity can be precisely controlled by varying the applied electrode potential.
  • Low Energy Consumption
Low electricity consumption per kg of desired product (< 8 kWh/kg of product).
  • Optimised Process Conditions
The process conditions for an electrochemical reaction can be optimised further by splitting the process into two or more discrete sections which can be controlled separately.
  • Easy Scale Up
Cost effective scale up is easily achieved by the addition of further electrochemical cells. This is easier than the conventional scale-up requirements of larger or multiple reactor vessels.
