Fuel cells (FCs) are clean, quiet and efficient devices which will soon be playing a very important role in all our lives. They convert the energy stored in chemical fuels, changing it into electrical energy by using electrochemical processes. Generally the fuel is hydrogen gas which reacts with oxygen in the air, producing only pure water as a by-product.

Many people are now familiar with the concept of fuel cells as a replacement for the internal combustion engine in vehicles in the new Hydrogen Economy. This technology uses Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Other types of fuel cell include Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) which are suitable for powering laptops and other small electronic goods (as the fuel comes in an easily replaceable liquid cartridge), and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) which use a variety of fuels at higher operating temperatures and are finding applications in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems.
